I do enjoy teaching, though only in moderation. When I had to teach the same class multiple times in a day, I found the experience monotonous. One course a year is just about right for meexciting, vibrant, and involving new things to teach and talk about. Indeed, early in my graduate studies, I realized Id never make it as an academic. Ironically, I discovered that doing all the things in my writing program that would prepare me for a good Ph. D. or MFA course being on the staff of journals, assisting professors, traveling to conferences would prevent me from actually writingso I threw all of that up in the air and doubled down on my novels. Some of my colleagues went on to professorships, but I was never really headed that direction. For me, it was always write or bust.
